Biography

Celia Cruz, born on October 21, 1925, in Havana, Cuba, was a dynamic force in Latin music, affectionately known as the "Queen of Salsa." Her electrifying voice and vibrant persona helped globalize Afro-Cuban music, making her a global icon. Cruz began her career in the 1950s with the renowned Cuban orchestra, La Sonora Matancera, where she captivated audiences with her fiery performances, quickly establishing herself as a standout talent. Celia Cruz's career spanned five continents, performing in countries across North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia, spreading the influence of salsa music to a global audience. Over her lifetime, she recorded more than seventy albums and earned twenty-three gold records. Cruz also won three Grammy Awards, four Latin Grammys, and received numerous honors, including a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was even honored with the National Medal of Arts by President Bill Clinton. In 2024, Celia Cruz became the first Afro-Latina to be honored on a U.S. quarter, immortalized with the inscription "¡AZÚCAR!" as part of the American Women Quarters™ Program.

Legacy & Impact

Her impact on Latin music and culture continues to resonate, solidifying her place as a pioneering figure in music history. Celia's iconic catchphrase "¡Azúcar!" (which means "sugar" in Spanish) originated in 1964 during a visit to a Cuban restaurant in Miami, Florida. After ordering a strong Cuban coffee, she was asked by the waiter if she wanted it with or without sugar. Cruz responded, "With AZÚCAR of course!" She later shared this humorous anecdote at one of her shows at Montmartre Cabaret in Miami, where it was met with laughter. Fans enjoyed the story so much that they requested it at every performance. Eventually, Cruz began announcing her entrance with a loud "¡Azúcar!" instead of telling the story, making it her signature phrase. She later referred to it as her "battle cry" and included it in her songs and performances, making it synonymous with her vibrant energy and love for life. Celia Cruz passed away on July 16th, 2003, in Fort Lee, New Jersey, marking the end of an era in Latin music. Yet, her legacy endures, as she continues to inspire artists and fans alike. Celia Cruz will always be remembered as the undisputed Queen of Salsa, leaving behind a timeless influence on the world of music.
