Biography
Diego Armando Maradona (30 October 1960 – 25 November 2020) was an Argentine professional football player and manager, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. An advanced playmaker who operated in the classic number 10 position, Maradona's vision, passing, ball control, and dribbling skills were combined with his small stature, which gave him a low centre of gravity and allowed him to manoeuvre better than most other players. He played for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Sevilla, and Newell's Old Boys during his club career, and is most famous for his time at Napoli where he led the club to its first-ever Serie A titles.
“A little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God.”
— Diego Maradona, on the 'Hand of God' goal
Legacy & Impact
Maradona's defining moment came at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, where he delivered what Roger Bennett of ESPN FC called 'the most virtuoso performance a World Cup has ever witnessed.' In the quarter-final against England—just four years after the Falklands War—Maradona scored two of the most famous goals in football history within four minutes: the controversial 'Hand of God' and the 'Goal of the Century,' a 60-meter dribble past five English players voted the greatest World Cup goal by FIFA.com. He captained Argentina to victory, winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. Maradona scored five goals and created five more for teammates en route to beating West Germany 3–2 in the final. He was named joint FIFA Player of the 20th Century alongside Pelé.
